About Janet
Janet Clukie is an award-winning wildlife and western oil painter based in North Georgia. Her work is inspired by a lifelong connection to nature, wildlife, ranch life, and the rugged landscapes of the American West.
Known for her detailed oil paintings of wildlife, horses, western subjects, and natural landscapes, Janet strives to create artwork that goes beyond representation. Each painting is designed to capture the mood, atmosphere, and emotional connection found in the outdoors.
Through extensive field research, photography, plein air studies, and firsthand experiences in nature, Janet gathers inspiration that becomes the foundation of her studio work. Her paintings invite viewers to experience the quiet moments of the wilderness, the strength of wildlife, and the enduring spirit of the western lifestyle.
Janet's work has been featured in exhibitions, publications, and juried shows across the United States. Her original paintings are collected by wildlife enthusiasts, western art collectors, and individuals seeking meaningful connections to nature through fine art.
Whether creating an original wildlife painting, a western landscape, or a commissioned animal portrait, Janet's goal remains the same: to create artwork that evokes emotion, preserves memories, and celebrates the beauty of the natural world.
In & out of the studio
Janet’s home includes a functional studio where her dog often keeps her company. She listens to a wide range of music while working—“cause why not?”—and likes to change the playlist to keep the atmosphere fresh. Whenever possible, Janet travels to collect her own reference material, reveling in the beauty of the natural world. When conditions allow, she sets up plein air equipment to capture the scene and record color notes. Those observations and impressions are brought back to the studio and woven into new paintings. Before starting a piece, Janet studies value patterns and produces preliminary sketches and color studies to establish the desired mood. She then readies the canvas and proceeds with the work, often engaging in substantial behind-the-scenes preparation to achieve the final result. Outside the studio, Janet values time with family and loved ones. She also enjoys photography and occasionally shoots with her vintage film camera, believing there is always something new to notice if you keep your eyes open.
